Administrative / biographical background:

Founded in 1838 as the Northern Asylum for the Blind & Deaf & Dumb in Wellington Place, Newcastle. Early proposals to amalgamate with the Royal Victoria Institution for the Blind foundered and from 1850 the blind were no longer catered for. At about the same time the Northern Counties Institution for the Deaf and Dumb, as it was now called, moved to Charlotte Square, but a building fund was established in 1858, and new purpose built premises at Moor Edge were opened in 1861. The building was extended in 1895 and 1904. More recent records, as well as older pupil records, plans, photographs and other items have been retained by the school and access is by arrangement with the head teacher.
