Administrative / biographical background:

Newcastle opened two unemployment centres in March 1919 under the authority of circular 1072 of the Board of Education. The boys centre was held at the United Methodist Schoolroom, Grantham Road and the girls at Westgate Hall, Westgate Road. Numbers at the girls centre were initially so great that a second centre was opened at the Salvation Army Hall, also in Westgate Road. However, both centres amalgamated at the Salvation Army in June 1919. The girls were taught English, Arithmetic, domestic duties, science in cooking and housecraft, first aid, hygiene, needlework, physical exercise and singing and there was also shorthand typing practice for those already skilled.
