The organisation was founded in 1921 by a committee of 29 owners of licensed houses in Newcastle and district, including Gateshead, Sunderland and along the River Tyne to North and South Shields. Their aim was to protect their interests regarding legislation and concerning the rates of pay and conditions of staff in public houses. The Association was represented at committee meetings of the Brewers Association
