Newcastle Subscription Water Co

Physical description: 9 SERIES
Immediate source of acquisition:

Accession 2761

Administrative / biographical background:

The Company was formally established February 1845 as the Whittle Dean Water Company with the aim to "construct a capacious resevoir in the bed of a stream at Whittle Dean [Northumberland] ...capable of containing upwards of a years supply", under the leadership of several well known Newcastle figures, including Richard Grainger, Sir John Fife and others with W.G. Armstrong as secretary. By August 1845, the company had bought out the business of the Newcastle Subscription Water C° (see DU.NGW/1 below) which had been experiencing difficulties in maintaining good supplies.
