Mawson, Swan and Morgan, c1878-1900, Newcastle

The partnership between Mawson, Swan and Morgan began in 1878. However, the business association between Mawson and Swan had commenced in the 1850s when Mawson started as a chemist and druggist and was joined by Joseph Swan. The business then expanded to include dispensing and in 1856 the manufacture of photographic collodions to a formula of Joseph Swan. This made the name of Mawson and Swan known throughout the photographic world.

Mawson was tragically killed in an explosion on the Town Moor in 1867 and his widow, Elizabeth, who was Joseph Swan's sister, was made a partner in the bookselling business and Thomas Morgan joined them.

In 1900 the business became a limited company with Thomas Morgan as chairman.

In 1974 the Company was taken over by the Midland Educational Company Ltd and in 1986 it closed.
