Administrative / biographical background:

A Roman Catholic mission was opened in Washington in 1863. For some years after the opening the mission was served from Houghton-Le-Spring.

 

The present church, designed by Dunn and Hansom, was opened in September 1878. Until about 1881, the name of the church was St Joseph and St Aloysius.
