Administrative / biographical background:

In August 1871 a temporary chapel. was opened in Tynemouth at the rear of the house occupied by Bishop Bewick of Hexham and Newcastle. By 1886 there were 150 Catholic people in the area. Father George Howe collected £300 in 1887 to build a new church and consequently the first stone of the present building was laid on 8 September 1889. The church opened on 1 June 1890. The building survived the effects of bomb damage in April 1941 and a new stained glass window was installed over the sanctuary in 1946 as a result of this. This parish originally extended up to beyond Whitley Bay but expanding population in the area led to the establishment of separate parishes in Whitley Bay and Cullercoats at the beginning of the century.
