Administrative / biographical background:

The Sunderland German Congregation and Seamen's Mission was established in 1863 to care for German immigrants living in Sunderland and also sailors coming into the Port of Sunderland. It was only the second to be set up in this country after the mission at Hull established in 1848.

In 1869 Pastor Harms took over the congregation. During the First World War, German missions around the country were closed and some sold. This was the fate of the Sunderland mission.
