Administrative / biographical background:

Also known from 1928 as the "Gutcher - Johnson Memorial". Has its origins in revivalist enthusiasm aroused in 1882 by the activities of Hettie Gutcher, the "girl singing - preacher" (later as Mrs H. Gutcher - Johnson she was secretary of the Building Fund for the 1928 building). Permanent premises for the resulting congregation on Wearside were opened in Bright Street in 1885, and in 1894 this was accepted by the Primitive Methodists into the 1st Sunderland PM Circuit (MC.Su5), and then from 1900 it was part of the 3rd PM Circuit (MC.Su11). The Church was rebuilt in 1928 as the "Gutcher - Johnson Memorial". In 1934 it became part of Sunderland North Methodist Circuit (MC.Su1), and was destroyed as a result of German bombing in World War 2. As a result very few records have survived.
