Administrative / biographical background:

An ad hoc committee of non-conformist layman and ministers, called together by the Mayor of Sunderland in July 1928 agreed to further the construction of a non conformist church in the new Humbledon Housing Estate. In 1932 work was completed on the Methodist Hall in Ettrick Grove, which was then used as a place of worship, until a new church was built adjoining the hall in 1960.
