Administrative / biographical background:

Laygate Church was founded in the 1840s, through the efforts of James Stevenson of Laygate House, for those employed in the west end of South Shields and for the workmen and their families of the Tyne Chemical Works of which he was Senior Partner.

The Laygate congregation was dissolved on 18 December 1938 and a trust created to realise the assets from the sale of the church, manse and the Stevenson Memorial Hall. The trustees then passed the money over for the building of the new St. Margaret's Church in Cleadon Park in 1954.
