Administrative / biographical background:

The parish of Holy Name, Jesmond was founded on 1 December 1901. The first proper church opened on 18 January at St Georges Terrace. It was built of iron and was only supposed to be temporary but it survived for almost twenty seven years. In its early years the parish also included the district of Benton. In February 1906 St Aidans, Benton was established. The present church was begun in 1928 and was officially opened on 19 November 1929.
