Administrative / biographical background:

Although Baptists trace their history in Newcastle back to 1650, it was in 1720 that a chapel was founded on Tuthill Stairs using a building opposite the Mansion House said to date back to 1485.

A new chapel in Tuthill Stairs was opened on 19 February 1798. In 1853 this closed and a new church opened in Bewick Street. This also functioned as the Baptist Church's Newcastle Headquarters for thirty years until the Tyne Improvement Commissioners bought it in 1884.

At that time the Congregation amalgamated with that of the Marlborough Crescent Church but it was soon decided to dispose of this church also and to build instead two new churches to serve more effectively the growing suburbs of Newcastle. One was built at Westgate and one at Jesmond and both opened in 1886.
