Administrative / biographical background:

A Methodist New Connexion Chapel was built at Great Lumley c.1821 and was known as Lumley, Bethel Chapel. In 1907, the Methodist New Connexion amalgamated with the United Methodist Free Church to form the United Methodist Church. With the amalgamation of all the branches of the Methodist Church in 1932, the Lumley Bethel congregation seems to have absorbed the Lumley Primitive Methodist congregation, and the Primitive Methodist Chapel was sold (see C.LY2).
