Administrative / biographical background:

Councils of Social Service are self-governing voluntary bodies whose membership includes representation from major voluntary organisations and statutory authorities. They are affiliated to and supported by the National Council for Social Service.

 

The Northumberland and Tyneside Council was formed in 1929 as the Tyneside Council of Social Service but changed its name in 1946 to reflect the fact that from 1939 it worked also in Northumberland.
