Administrative / biographical background:

This area was originally served by St Joseph's Church and a priest from that church said Mass every Sunday in the district from 1886. In 1903, land was bought on Sunderland Road to build an iron church for the congregation this church was opened on 18 September 1904.

 

The church was extensively rebuilt in 1955 when the iron frame of the building was clad with bricks, a slate roof was laid and an extension added to the building. At this time the altar was moved from the west to the east end of the church as is more usual the new church was formally opened on 21 July 1955.
