Physical description: 4 series

Accession 2461 (part)

Administrative / biographical background:

This professional association is organised on a hierarchical basis, headed by a national executive composed of representatives from district committees which in turn are composed of individuals from local Licensed Victuallers Associations.

The North East District meetings are held quarterly and dealt with prices and regulations with the Breweries regarding the condition of tenants and the wages and conditions of staff. This group had links with the North Eastern division of the National Trade Defence Association and eventually the committee of the latter organisation was elected at the annual meeting of the NULV.

The organisation gave rise to the development of other groups related to the Licensed Victualling trade. The Licensed Victuallers Defence League is a league of LVAs working to protect their trade interests and affiliated to the National Trade Defence Association.

The District Ladies Auxiliary Committee of the L.V.A. met on a quarterly basis and arranged fund-raising and social events throughout the region.

In 1953, a scheme for the provision of house for retired publicans and their families was suggested under the auspices of the N.U.L.V. The resulting North East Licensed Victuallers Homes Committee was chaired by the chairman of the Ladies Auxiliary Committee and attended by representatives of the Licensed Victuallers Association and the Northumberland and Durham Brewers Association. In 1967 this local organisation was amalgamated with the Licensed Victuallers National Homes although a district committee continued to meet in the North East area, and was known as the North East Management Committee. All the organisations connected with the brewing industry contribute to the National Home and take an interest in developments concerning the homes. The organisation changed its name to the National Association of Licensed Victuallers in the late 1980s.
