The first item stems from the considerable friction which arose between members of the Chapter and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners when individual prebends became vacant and were taken over by the latter (3 & 4 Vict. c. 113). Until his death in 1852, J.B. Freeland was both Chapter Clerk and the Commissioners' local agent, and was therefore involved in much correspondence. The letter books consist of press copies of the Chapter Clerk's out-letters.
