These are the leases and allied papers relating to Chapter estates in Sussex and elsewhere. The site numbers, allocated by the Chapter clerk in the 18th cent., if not earlier, remained the same throughout, but the names of some properties were changed frequently, especially when a property was subdivided; the names here are taken from these documents or from the rentals in Cap/I/26.

The Chapter rental is divided as follows:

 

Cap/I/28/1-18 Rectories, i.e. great tithes.

 

Cap/I/28/19-24 Portions, i.e. parts of tithes.

 

Cap/I/28/25-34 Pensions.

 

Cap/I/28/35-40 Indemnities.

 

Cap/I/28/41-60 'Foreign' rents.

 

Cap/I/28/61-103 'Principal' rents.

 

Cap/I/28/104-165 Sherburne rental.

 

Cap/I/28/166-167 Free and customary tenants.

 

Cap/I/28/168-264 Chichester rental.

 

Cap/I/28/265-268 Pensions from St. Mary's Hospital for chantries, etc.

 

Cap/I/28/269-272 Additions to Chichester rental.
