8 April 1537

 

Between (a) Elys Bradshaw, mayor, and the burgesses and citizens of Chichester, and (b) William Fleshmonger, Dean of Chichester

 

In return for the payment by (b) of 600 marks for the redemption of the fee farm paid to the Lord Rosse [Thomas, Earl of Rutland] (a) covenant

 

(i) to pay (b) £13. 6. 8d. p.a. at the Chapel of St. George in the Cathedral, in four equal portions, with a penalty of £3. 6. 8d. for non payment, and rights of distress.

 

(ii) at their lawdays, to impose fines of no more than 12d. p.a. for the commoners called victuallers, butchers, brewers, bakers, millers, fishmongers, taverners and innholders, 3d. p.a. for the inferior commoners called typlers for selling bread, ale, beer, eggs, apples, butter, cheese, oatmeal, candles and such like. This ordinance is to be declared to the commoners when they are gathered in their common hall to elect the next mayor.

 

(iii) after (b)'s death, (a) are to say for his soul the prayers which they now say for Master Ivo Darell, late Canon Residentiary, on the north side of the church against the south side of the altar of Jesus, next to (b)'s tomb.
