Between (a) Fr. John de Valle, prior of Wilmyngton, general proctor in England for the abbot and convent of Grestain, Lisieux, and (b) Sir Richard Sogheworthe, rector of Alfrichesten, over tithes in Alfriston.

 

Recites: 28 July 1278 Composition between (a) Sir Thomas, then rector of Alfriston and (b) Fr. Reginald, prior of Wilmyington proctor in England for Grestain, on tithes due to Grestain.

 

The tithing lands having since changed hands, causing uncertainty, both parties have agreed to abide by the testimony of good and lawful men of the parish, viz: John de Dene, John Janyn, Reginald Dyn, John atte Wode. They testify that the abbot and convent had half the tithes of the land now held by John de Dene, namely 3 r. at la Crouche, 3 r. at Lhynkesende of Schortbrodacr', 4 a. at Brodelonde, 5 a. in le Dalelonde, ½ a. in the same forlange between the land of Andrew Peuerel on both sides of Whyteacr' next le Horsweye, Petacr' there, Hakeneyacr' there, 1 a. at le Stone, Melleacr', 1½ a. in Lhoselond [next to] Lhynkacr', 1 a. in Litledene, 3 a. in la Southelde, 1 a. called Redacr', 1 a. there called Stonyacr' in Westerdene, 1 (3 words gone), 1 a. called Oxacr', 1 a. called Schoueledacr', 1 a. called Stonyacr' in Esterdene, 2 a. in Northelde, 2 (5 words gone) at le Belle, 1 a. called Pigeferlacr'. Also 4 a. at Redegore, 1 a. at Hundeslonde, 1 a. at (7 words gone) over Rouelhynke, 2 a. at Rowelhynkesende, 1 a. in la Combe between the land of the said John de Dene which he purchased (9 words gone), 3 a. in la Combe between the land formerly of Richard Maufee, 1 a. in la Knolle, 3 a. in la Knolle, 1 a. next (9 words gone) Stonyacr' in la Knolleyne, 3 r. there, ½ a. under Rowelhynke. They also say that the said religious collect two-thirds of (9 words gone) ...nge of the holding formerly of Richard de Ferles which John Janyn now holds, 1 a. in Eldelonde, 1 a. in Butforlange, 5 a. in (5 words gone) ...forlange, 1 a. on Lhidforlange, 1 a. on le Belle, 1 a. Bynorthestrete, 3 a. in the same forlange, 3 r. there (4 words gone). They also say that the religious have had one-third of the tithes of 2 a. under the barton or garden formerly of Richard de Ferles eastward, that (1 word gone) Tollere and John Palmere now hold 19 a. of the holding formerly of Richard de Ferles, from which the religious have two thirds of the tithe. They have all the tithes from the lands now held by Richard Maufee and John Commbere, formerly of John the clerk of Wyngeton, namely 1 a. called Melleacr', 2½ a. in Ponke, 1 a. at Krikke, 1 a. at Wygate, 3 r. over Harenore, 3 r. there, ½ a. in la Combe to the north of Rodend, ½ a. in Longenakre, 1 a. in Blakeacr', 1 a. at Poghe, the acre called Gloneacr', 2 a. in Langtharm, 1 a. under Gloneacr', 1 a. at la Croucche, 2 a. called Bailleslond, 1 a. at Brokforlang, 3 r. at Esterblakenakr', 1½ a. at Billynge, 1 a. in Brynkforlange (and 3 r. there interlined). Also all tithes of 1½ a. in le Redeforlange which William Toche now holds and which Andrew Maufee lately sold; also half the tithes of certain [land] (1 word gone) le Coupe of William le Vyle and Martin fitz Andrew, now held to farm by William Aleyn and William atte Hayle, namely 1½ a. in le Redeforlange, 2 a. in Scorteforlange, 1½ a. in Butforlange, 3 r. Vndefere, 3 r. in Eldelonde, 1½ a. in Longeforlange, 1½ a. in the same furlong, 3 r. at la Droue, 1 r. in Buttforl[ang], 1 a. at le Balle, 1 r. at Heuedlond, 1 a, 1 r. next to the house of William Aleyn, 2 a. at Bynorthestrete, 3 a. on le Hamme.
