Description:

By R. Bishop of Norwich of [23 October] 1254. Letters of Walter, Bishop of Norwich permitting the Dean and Chapter of Chichester to appropriate the church of Mendlesham on its next vacancy, and as rectors to receive two-third tithes, the vicar to have the remaining one third. The Dean and Chapter are to pay

 

8 marks for a priest to celebrate at Bishop Richard's tomb.

 

12 marks for two candles to burn perpetually before it.

 

5 marks to be distributed on his anniversary.

 

2 marks p.a. to the "cardinales" and the choirboys.

 

This document is chiefly remarkable for the following eulogy of St. Richard :-

 

"Ultissimus ecclesie fundator sternicationes per ordinem lapides eius fundensque eam in saphiro ac jaspide et lapidibus sculptis futuras professionum diversitates ordinumque varietates ac diversas vite meritorum regulas in varietate lapidum persignavit. Inter quas nobile Cicestrie ecclesia per decanum et canonicos ipsius ecclesie sub habitu regulari nomine Ihesu Christi venerabiliter colitur veneratur. Lausque dei beate virginis et omnium sanctorum in altum gloriose deducitur et celebratur non inmerito communeratur."
