The Commissioners were appointed in pursuance of an Act of Parliament of 1724 (10 Geo I c7) 'for restoreing the Harbour of Rye ... to its antient goodness'. A new commission was appointed in 1797 under an act of the same year (37 Geo III c130). The functions of the Commissioners were taken over in 1932 by the Rother and Jury's Gut Catchment Board, under the Land Drainage Act 1930
