Administrative / biographical background: |
The board was established under an Act of Parliament in 1870 to remedy the nuisance caused to the inhabitants of the Cliftonville, Brunswick Square and Brunswick Terrace areas by the discharge of sewage into the sea. It was composed of members of the Brighton Local Board of Health, the West Hove Improvement Commissioners and the Brunswick Square and Terrace Commissioners. The board arranged for the construction of a sewer to discharge at Portobello in Telscombe, to which branch sewers were connected. The minute books listed were in the custody of Brighton Borough Council in 1974 when responsibility for sewerage passed to the newly created Southern Water Authority |
