Title: ARCHIVE OF THE SAMPSON FAMILY OF NINFIELD
Description:

Title deeds, wills, settlements and other records mainly relating to the Sampson family

These documents do not provide a complete record of the descent of the Sampson family estate, nor do they afford a complete pedigree of the Sampsons or reveal their relationship to various other families concerned in the deeds, such as the Harrisons, Bodys, Sissons and Beechings. Richard Sampson, a distiller, who became a freeman of Pevensey in 1683, is described as of Pevensey, 1693-95, and of Ninfield from 1696. Probably he came originally from Bexhill (see the will of his mother, Elizabeth Sampson of Bexhill, widow, 1671. Lewes Arch-deaconry wills, A32, p. 215). When he died in 1715, he left distiller's shops at Ninfield and Pevensey, and farms and lands at Bexhill, Herstmonceux, and Crowhurst (ibid. A49, p. 125). He was succeeded by his son, Richard Sampson, gent., who died in 1759 leaving the property to his son Richard (ibid. A60, p. 138). According to the Land Tax assessment for Ninfield (QDE/2/1/E1), Richard was succeeded in 1779 by John Tilden, later called John Tilden Sampson. John Tilden of Battle, gent., occurs in a deed of 1793 (SAM/63, 64), and Leonora Tilden Sampson of Battle, widow, in one of 1815 (SAM/65, 66). The Land Tax assessments show that between 1811 and 1813 John Hammond, subsequently called John Hammond Sampson, held the Ninfield property. On his death without issue he was succeeded by his kinsman and godson Richard King, a farmer of Alfriston, then of Willingdon. By 1816 this Richard had been succeeded by his first son, Richard King Sampson, who was living at Hailsham in 1841 (SAM/5). In 1854 a Thomas Sampson, gent., received a lease of Moorhall, Ninfield, and he is perhaps to be identified with the Thomas who was living there in 1878 (Kelly's Sussex Directory)
