Administrative / biographical background:

The pre-1857 Registry of Shipping and Seamen records are held by The National Archives. The agreements, crew lists and logbooks dating from 1857 onwards have been dispersed to various locations: the bulk of the records were sent to the Memorial University of Newfoundland, while a number of samples were retained by The National Archives, The National Maritime Museum and local record offices. East Sussex Record Office took a random sample for vessels registered at Newhaven and Rye.
