WHAT A CLOSURE PERIOD MEANS

The Record Office is increasingly involved in safeguarding important contemporary records for future research. To some of these there is a public right of access, however recent they may be, but others are regarded by their depositors as containing potentially sensitive or confidential material, particularly where individuals and their private affairs are concerned. The general rule here (analogous to that employed for central government records in the Public Record Office) is that most classes of record not subject to a statutory right of access are closed until they are at least thirty years old, while at the furthest extreme records relating to the purely private business of individuals (e.g. the census returns) are closed for one hundred years.

This does not necessarily mean that you cannot see such records. What it does mean is that you have to put a case to the owner or depositor of the records, who may well decide that you have a valid reason for inspecting them. In that case, the records will be produced for you on production of a valid written authorisation, which may require you to observe certain conditions about use, reproduction, or photocopying. A form is available in the Search Room to enable you to obtain such permission with a minimum of formality.
