Church of England, Westfield Parish, East Sussex

Immediate source of acquisition:

Transferred by the Sussex Archaeological Society on 1 April 1957 (ACC 228), and deposited by the incumbent and PCC, 2 May 1957 (ACC 231), 3 June 1975 (ACC 1869), 9 August 1994 (ACC 6404)

Custodial history:

In 1937 a group of records of poor law administration was discovered in the tower of Westfield church and handed to Westfield Parish Council. After consulting the clerk of Battle RDC, the parish council clerk sent the papers to the Sussex Archaeological Society where they were repaired by the Revd Walter Budgen, the Society's Curator of Deeds. On 1 April 1957 (ACC 228) these records were among nine groups of parish records, acquired by the Society under various circumstances, which were transferred to ESRO as Diocesan Record Office; the Westfield records were listed as PAR 504/31-37. Were there evidence that the documents had been passed to the Parish Council as a conscious administrative act, they would have been transferred to its archive, P 504; since the chain of custody by the ecclesiastical parish was hardly broken, they have been allowed to remain in the parish archive.
