The Commissioners were appointed in pursuance of an Act of Parliament of 1724 (10 Geo I c7) 'for restoring the Harbour of Rye ... to its antient goodness'. A new commission was appointed in 1797 under an act of the same year (37 Geo III c130). The functions of the Commissioners were taken over by the Rother and Jury's Gut Catchment Board in 1932
