Reference: AMS5873
Title: Phillipps Charters, Salehurst
Held by: East Sussex and Brighton and Hove Record Office (ESBHRO), not available at The National Archives
Language: English
Immediate source of acquisition:

Photocopies given by Surrey Record Office, Kingston, 6 February 1984 (Acc 4215)

Custodial history:

The originals of these charters were purchased at Sotheby's in April 1981 lot 186 (AMS5873/4 below) and December 1982 lot 25 (AMS5873/1-3 below). Lot 186 in the former sale was purchased by East Sussex Record Office and therefore this deed must have been mis-sorted by Sotheby's; it perhaps relates to the other Sedlescombe deeds of Battle Abbey properties from the same lot, listed as AMS5789/7, AMS5789/8. The originals have been retained at Kingston

It is clear from Sussex Record Society 53.29 that the three Salehurst deeds (AMS5873/1-3 below) relate to Upper Ockham, which was granted in 1427 by Robert Bokesell to his daughter Isabella, wife of John Pont. The property later passed to the Wildgoose family of Iridge, the deeds of whose estate are frequently encountered in Phillipps lots. Alternatively, the deeds could derive from the Collins of Socknersh archive, another common Phillipps group (see AMS5789), since the estate had passed from the Socknersh to the Bokesell family before its acquisition by Collins. The descent in SRS 53 is based partly on an examination of other Phillipps charters, copies of which are listed as AMS5871 above
