Details of AMS5691
Reference: AMS5691
Title: Deeds, maps etc
Description:

In his book Bodiam Castle published in 1926 Lord Curzon refers to most of these documents as being in his own possession along with others which are now no longer present. Of these other documents the only ones definitely traced are court rolls for 1607-26, 1645, 1671, 1717 - 41 and one undated roll which form Additional Rolls 66690 - 95 at the British Library. A return made to the HMC in 1925 shows that the documents were then still at Kedleston. For microfilm of the court rolls, see XA15/1

Other records of Bodiam manor are at the Huntington Library, California (court rolls 1645-46, 1648, 1650), and at this office (1640 rental and 1647 list of quit rents, SAS/HC 186 and 219; rental 1704 and court roll 1736, DAP1; map of land in Penhurst held of Bodiam, 1671, AMS5692). The descent of the manor of Bodiam in the 16th and 17th centuries is very obscure. It seems likely that both the moieties by which the manor was held in 1600 had been acquired by Nathaniel Powell by 1663 since the series of accounts (AMS5691/2/1-35) refers to two separate estates held by Powell, one as baronet and one as knight suggesting that the former was only acquired after his father's death. The likelihood that Powell acquired the Bosville moiety is further strengthened by the appearance with the other papers of AMS5691/4
