Title: | Court roll of Crowham manor in Westfield, 1327-1375 (with gaps) |
Description: |
The date of m.6 suggests that this is an early 17th century compilation of useful court rolls for the reign of Edward III. Similar groups for other reigns were probably assembled at the same time but have not survived The information contained in the document confirms the tentative identification of AMS5442/1-2 as belonging to the manor. The effect of the black death on the manor is shown by mm. 3-5 The appearance of a court for Glassye (in Beckley) on m.1 is probably explained by the fact that the de Pebshams, Lords of Crowham at this time, were also lords of Pebsham manor of which Glassye was part M1 2 Dec 1327 at Crowham 21 Oct 1336 for Glassye at Crowham M 2 18 Oct 1335, 23 Oct 1336 M3 11 Mar 1348, 27 May 1348, 19 Nov 1348, 29 Apr 1349 M4 1 July 1349, 19 Nov 1349 M5 15 Apr 1350, 11 Feb 1351, 18 May 1351 M6 fragment of a petition concerning subornment of a murder jury at assizes, nd c1580 M7 16 Jan 1354, 5 Aug 1354, 29 Oct 1354, 4 Aug 1355 M8 6 Oct 1355, 6 Oct 1356, 4 May 1357, 5 Oct 1357 M9 9 Oct 1364, 20 Nov 1364, 9 June 1365, 23 July 1365 24 Oct 1365, 20 July 1366 M10 21 Feb 1375, 14 Mar 1375, 4 May 1375, 1 Oct 1375, 22 Oct 1375 Endorsed: for my goddson Mr Rycard Cheyne 1 thynke Richard Cheyney inherited manor in 1559: VCH ix, 91 |
