Description:

Deeds of Sherrald, The Street, Sedlescombe, 1737-1896

On 22 March 1737 Thomas Read of Salehurst carpenter and Ann his wife conveyed the property, then in the occupation of the churchwardens and overseers of Sedlescombe, to Henry Snow of Sedlescombe tanner and Edward Snow of Westfield yeoman in trust for William Weston of Sedlescombe carpenter and his wife mary for £61.1s.0d. The property was then described as a house, garden and orchard (5680/1,2). On 30 May 1740 Weston made an agreement with Stephen Robinson of Sedlescombe surgeon regarding a right of way to a house that Robinson had recently built upon part of the orchard (5680/3). On 21 June 1768 Weston's son John of Sedlescombe cordwainer joined with his mother Mary (then married to Edward Butler of Sedlescombe cordwainer) to sell the house (then a piece of land with a chimney on it) to Isaac Baker of Sedlescombe yeoman for £40 (5680/4-6) who by his will proved at Lewes 27 May 1786 left the house, then called Montreal and in his own occupation, to Isaac son of his son John Baker of Sedlescombe farmer (5680/7). Perhaps owing to some defect in the title passed by Weston, on 31 March 1808 he joined Baker (then of Tonbridge, Kent, yeoman) to convey to John Watts of Battle surgeon, and Thomas Gorring of Battle draper his trustee for £325 (5680/8-11). Watts and Gorring (now of Hastings gentleman) conveyed to Edwards Ades of Sedlescombe yeoman and his trustee John Luck of Whatlington yeoman on 3 June 1810 for £350 (5680/12,13). By his will proved at Lewes 13 May 1829 Ades left the house to his wife Mary for life and after her death on 19 April 1852 the executors, Stephen Walter late of Horsmonden but then of West Farleigh gentleman and George Thomas late of Westfield but then of Bexhill farmer conveyed the house to John Catt of Sedlescombe mason for £210 on 29 June 1852 (5680/14). After his widow Catherine's death in 1896 John Catt's executors (John Bray of St Leonards auctioneer and house agent and Linton Edmund Alchin of Sedlescombe, grocer and draper) sold the property (then called "Wistaria" and including shops) to John Robert Hyland Catt of Scowes Cottage, Cross-in-Hand Waldron builder for £500 on 16 June 1896 (5680/15)

Deeds of Magpie Cottage, 1895-99

(This property is apparently unconnected with the above)

Edwin Eldridge of Sedlescombe carpenter bought the property for £335 at the auction of the estate of Joseph Eldridge deceased and it was conveyed to him by the executors on 10 December 1895 (5680/16-18). On 30 March 1899 Eldridge sold the property to Harvey Trewythen Brabazon Combe of Oaklands, Westfield, esq. for £475 together with a cottage converted from a workshop on the other side of the road which he had purchased from Henry Hicks on 5 May 1864.
