Administrative / biographical background:

Founded in 1891 as the Southdown Sheep-breeders Association, the society adopted its present name on amalgamation with the Southdown Sheep Club in 1897. At the first meeting it was stated that the association had been formed as a result of the dissatisfaction of several breeders with the breed and a desire to start a stockbook for the registration of pure-bred sheep. The three principal reasons given were, to secure greater purity in the breed, to maintain such purity and to enable the export of the sheep to America
