(1) letter from John Griffen, Battle, to [Joseph] Mercer, Maidstone; the wood that Mr Elliot bought of JM contains 7a Or 4p; endorsed: White Down Wood [in Westfield]; 9 Feb 1737

 

(2) letter from Isaac Gostling, Sedlescombe, to Thomas Mercer, doctor in Lewes; encloses plan of the wood which he measured ((3); [the tenant Joseph] Hart is sorry to hear of the death of TM's daughter; 'this should have been sent lasts week but the news man did not call upon me as promised to do'; 15 Nov 1750

 

(3) 'Mr Mercer's wood adjoining to Widown Barn [in Westfield] surveyed by Isaac Gostling, Jul 1750'

 

(4) copy letter from Thomas Mercer, Lewes, to [John] Griffen, Battle; instructions to measure White Down Wood in Westfield, which was cut last winter, to settle a dispute with [Joseph] Hart, who will pay JG; John Elliot, tanner at Sedlescombe, will show it; 3 Dec 1750; copy letter from Thomas Mercer, Lewes, to John Elliot ('cousin Elliot'); request to supervise the measurement, about which he is suspicious; last measured when the wood was sold to JE's brother [in 1737]; has seen Young English, the Westfield miller, concerning the death of Mr Russell; 3 Dec 1750; copy letter from Thomas Mercer, Lewes, to Jospeh Hart; doubts accuracy of [Isaac] Gostling's survey; as a trustee he must have it measured again by [John] Griffen of Battle, who is to be supervised by J[ohn] Elliot; 3 Dec 1750

 

(5) copy letter from Thomas Mercer, Lewes, to John Russell at Westfield Wheel; applies for a year's rent for Crabbrooke, due 29 Sep 1750, to be paid to Robert Mosley, tanner at Sedlescombe; does he wish to continue tenant?; 3 Dec 1750

 

(6) note from John Griffen [to Thomas Mercer] specifying the means of measuring the wood 'according to custom'; endorsed: note of the content of Whitedown Wood [in Westfield], surveyed 6 Dec 1750

 

(7) letter from J[ohn] Elliot to Dr [Thomas] Mercer, Lewes, enclosing (6) and speculating on the discrepancy; 'I wish you and all friends a merry Christmas when it comes'; 13 Dec 1750
