Born in New York, 1895. Commissioned into the East Surrey Regiment, 1914. Served with 1st Battalion and 2nd Battalion. Appointed to Adjutant General's staff. Awarded Croix de Guerre. Commanded 1st Battalion, Aug-Sep 1939. Posted to 49th Division. Served with Land Forces Middle East and then as Chief of Staff to Field Marshal Montgomery, with the British Army of the Rhine, 1945. Later appointed Director of Infantry at the War Office. Appointed General Officer in Command of East Africa Command. Retired, 1951. Served as Colonel of the Regiment, 1946-1954.
