Administrative / biographical background:

Two elder daughters of Isaac Taylor (1759-1829). Both learned engraving from their father, but are chiefly remembered as writers for children. They worked alone and in collaboration on several books, which were illustrated by their brother Isaac. Ann also wrote literary reviews for the Eclectic Review, and in 1813 married Rev Joseph Gilbert. Jane contributed numerous items to Youth's Magazine under the pseudonym 'Q.Q.', and also published Correspondence between a mother and her Daughter at School (1817) in collaboration with her mother Ann (Martin) Taylor.
