Administrative / biographical background: |
Edward Baker purchased Great Cornard mill in 1851. He was succeeded on his death in 1891 by his son Sydney, who was joined in 1901 by G.B. Stannard. Sydney Baker's eldest son Alan succeeded his late father in 1921 and a limited company - Edward Baker Ltd - was created in the following year. In due course Alan Baker's brothers Kenneth, Edward and Hugh joined the company as directors. The company bought Greens Mill, Maldon in 1943. In 1955 the company was restructured. Edward Baker Ltd was renamed Edward Baker Holdings Ltd, with a new Edward Baker Ltd and Green Bros (Maldon) as operating companies. In 1967 flour milling was concentrated at Maldon, the Cornard site being used for the production of animal feeds. Edward Baker Holdings Ltd was sold in 1989 to Harrisons and Crosfield plc. |
