Details of HA 517
Reference: HA 517
Title: Estate and family records of the Elwes family of Stoke College, Stoke-by-Clare
Description:

1 Sir Gervase Elwes acquired the manors of Stoke-by-Clare and Erbury in 1651 through his marriage with Amy, heiress of William Trigg of London; by 1659 he had also come into possession of the Stoke College estate in and around Stoke-by-Clare. Useful background to the Elwes family and their estate can be found in R.Douglas Brown, A history of Stoke-by-Clare from 1548 (1985).

2 Mr Brown used these records before they came to the Record Office and his book uses document references that no longer apply. It is however possible to correlate his references with the numbers the documents now have.

3 These have the references HA 517/1-108: a list of them can be found at the end of the main catalogue.

4 There are further Stoke College estate records, including a map of the estate, 1791-93, in the Essex Record Office (Guide to the Essex Record Office, 1969, p.165).
