Catalogue description Whitworth Papers

This record is held by Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Archive Service: William Salt Library

Details of 26/22
Reference: 26/22
Title: Whitworth Papers
Description:

This collection also incorporates two other gifts by the above firm, previously numbered 7/21 and 17/21. Though from a solicitors office, it mainly comprises the personal papers of Richard Whitworth (1734-1811) of Batchacre Grange. He was a quarrelsome and eccentric man, and is the subject of an article by S. A. H. Burne in Trans. North Staffordshire Field Club, Vol. LXII which uses these papers as a basis.

Date: 16th - 19th Centuries
Arrangement:

The grouping of the collection is largely self explanatory. All the deeds have been grouped together; and no attempt has been made to separate off those not immediately connected with Richard Whitworth. The reason for the presence of the Welsh deeds (No. 1/4) is not obvious. No special section is devoted to maps, of which there are but few, but these are placed with the bundles to which they refer.
