Administrative / biographical background:

The firm of John Perks and Sons, founded in the eighteenth century, was probably the first manufacturer of edge tools in Wolverhampton. The only surviving record of the earlier years of the firm is a day book covering the years 1793-1833 and from this it would appear that for a short time at least John Perks was in partnership with a Mr. Devey. Order books and a trade mark book survive for the late nineteenth century but the collection consists largely of a series of mid-20th century financial account books.

From c.1945 the company appears to have been sub-divided into three divisions to administer the sale of products overseas to Africa, the Far East amd South America, while a fourth, The Monmore Fork and Hoe Co., seems to have dealt with the home market. The records, however, continued to be kept centrally.
