Description:

Sir Thomas Wroth of North Petherton died in 1721, leaving by his will £500 to establish a charity school in North Petherton to educate 20 poor children of the parish in reading, writing and the religion of the Church of England. The interest on the bequest was paid until 1763 when the money was devoted to the purchase of land at Lyng. The charity was regulated by scheme of 1879 and the school site in Pound Street sold by Order of 1884. The income was subsequently paid out in tickets for savings or redeemable by tradesmen for clothing, etc., to North Petherton children with good annual attendances at their respective schools.
