Catalogue description Somerset Deeds, etc, transferred by Wells Museum

The Museum's holdings are artificially divided into two parts: (1) A group of 463 plus documents numbered originally in the Museum and either transcribed or calendared there in two volumes, probably c.1937.

(2) All other documents, not numbered and not listed while in the Museum.

So far as (1) is concerned, the first transcript volume has, at the front, a brief list of contents and [the Museum's] location index for documents 1-406. Approximately 105 of the documents listed were handed over to the Bath City Library and these have now been identified as part of the collection temporarily deposited in this Record Office in 1963-4, for which a brief list will be found in the file for DD\X/BT. A further 30 or so documents were handed over either to the Chapter Clerk or to various non-Somerset institutions. Approximately 250 have been deposited as parts of all the above accessions, excluding C/1937, but there still remain about 100 documents not yet accounted for, which may still be at the Museum. Details of items transferred elsewhere have been incorporated from the transcript volume. Documents not accounted for have no addition or the unexplained 'Parfitt' or 'Serel's Book' added.

For convenience, in the present catalogue the general reference DD\WM 1 has been assigned to the numbered documents and their own original number has been retained as a sub-number (DD\WM 1/1, 1/2 etc.). Thus, if future accessions include any or all of the missing numbers they can be merged in without difficulty and the running list of numbers amended accordingly.

The un-numbered documents have been catalogued in sequence according to their accession in the normal fashion for the office's catalogues, beginning with DD\WM 2.
