Title: | RAWLE OF PORLOCK |
Description: |
The Rawles were a family of yeoman farmers who came to hold a number of leasehold and copyhold estates in Porlock and the surrounding area, primarily within the manors of Porlock, the Rectory of Porlock and East Luccombe. Most of these properties were acquired by Thomas, the son of John Rawle, and by his son Thomas. The last members of the family to figure as parties in this collection are George Rawle, gent., of Court Place, Porlock, which he first leased in 1845, and his son Thomas. The documents cover a period from 1711 to 1937 and cover five generations of Rawles; they are mainly concerned with landholding so that the bulk of them fall into the classes of property tenure, testamentary and estate affairs. The accompanying pedigree has been compiled partly from the documents themselves and partly from monumental inscriptions in Porlock churchyard Deeds illustrating title of members of the Rawle family to leasehold and copyhold estates; the majority are leases/copyhold leases in reversion. Those deeds in 2 relate to properties which do not appear to have later become Rawle estates; those of the third property probably fell into Rawle hands when Elias and Robert Falvey mortgaged the house to Thomas Rawle. |
