Description:

Deeds and cognate documents relating to properties in the parishes of West Challow (co.Berks.), 1713-58(2), Hungerford (co.Berks. and co.Wilts.), 1652-1838(11), and Chipping Lambourn (co.Berks.), 1861(1).

 

Lease for seven years, by Alexander Popham of Littlecote, esq., of a messuage and lands in West Charlow [West Challow, co.Berks.], 1713; endorsed in a much later hand sold to Lord Wantage 1896' and 'With Terrier & Map of Farm (Green Book) made 1757'. Small green volume, entitled 'A Survey of the manor of Petwick, the lands of the Honble. Edward Popham Esqr. lying in the parish of West Charlow in the County of Berks. With an account of the trees of each sort in the hedgerows. Surveyed in the month of October 1758 by Edward Smith of Shrivenham Berks.', giving the names of tenants and properties, and the acreage with and without 'the mounds' [marking the boundaries], and also the number of oaks, elms, and ash trees, indicating the sides of the fields on which they grew. Bound into the volume is a map similarly dated and 1 entitled; watercolour on one membrane; 10½ in. (height) x 15½ in. (width); 32 poles to one inch (10 in. to one mile); showing names and acreages of fields, the 'bounding mounds', gates, farm buildings, and footpaths. For the section of surveys and maps, see nos. Lease of a dwellinghouse by Alexander Popham of Littlecote, esq., 1652. Conveyance of a messuage etc. to Alexander Popham, 1656. Lease of a messuage etc. to Edward William Leyborne Popham of Littlecote in Ramsbury, esq., Lieutenant General, 1838. All the foregoing properties are in Charnham Street in the Wiltshire part of the parish of Hungerford. Contract between the inhabitants of Hungerford and Thomas Huzzy of Hungerford Park (co.Berks.), gent., concerning the exchange of holdings in various furlongs, 1659 [later 17th century paper copy]. Conveyances, etc., 1817-36, relating to a dwellinghouse in the town of Hungerford (co. Berks.), acquired by Edward William Leyborne Popham in 1836; (seven documents).
