Description:

Volume inscribed 'A Survey of the Manor of Neyland and Badcombe in the County of Somerset belonging to Francis Popham Esquire', [undated].

 

Giving, in tabular form, reference to the map, names, acreage, and state (arable, meadow, pasture, etc.), of the properties, for each tenant's holdings for the estates in hand, with the addition of names of 'lives', yearly value, rents, and heriots, for the estates upon lives.

 

Map [with title similar to that of survey] '... Survey'd by T. Jeffery. 1773'; ink on one membrane; 24 in. x 50 in.; 4 ch. to one inch [20 in. to one mile].

 

Showing most of the former civil parish of Nyland and Batcombe [amalgamated with Cheddar in 1933], with numbered fields, a few major place names, and an occasional note of other ownership.

 

Paper document [found inside the map], headed 'The Manor of Nylands with Badcombe and the royalties &c.', and apparently (from the names of the tenants) drawn up circa 1790.

 

Giving in tabular form, names of tenants, brief description of properties with acreage, names of 'lives', lord's rents, and yearly value. At a later date, the yearly value figures have been totalled and the number of year's purchase added in order to arrive at a complete valuation of the estate.
