Introductory note

The greater part of this collection concerns the property interests of the Tutton and Knyfton families, centred around Uphill, Wedmore and Westbury. The records deposited illustrate the building-up of these estates through several generations and the original arrangement of these documents, generally small deed bundles for each individual purchase, has enabled the collection to be grouped by purchaser.

The Knyfton family represented here derives ultimately from Thomas Kniveton of Mugginton (co.Derby) who married (approx. 1620) Elizabeth, dau. of Sir Wm. Kniveton of Mercaston (co.Derby), a junior branch of the same family. His grandson, George Knyfton, married Mary, only child of Thomas Hobbs of Uphill in 1698 and settled at Uphill where he had a numerous family and apparently lived until 1744. A deed of 1713 (DD/NW 11) describes him as a 'surveyor'.

George's elder son, Thomas, married Miss Mary Tutton in 1765 and so brought the Tutton family estates into the Knyfton family; as 'Mary Knyfton, widow' she continued to purchase property after the death of her husband, which occurred in 1776. Further acquisitions were made by their son, Thos. Tutton Knyfton (1770-1810) but the greatest expansion of the estate was the work of their grandson, Thos. Tutton Knyfton, jun. (1798-1887), who purchased Uphill Castle and extensive property in 1832, and another major holding (incl. the manorial rights of Uphill) in 1853. The property of the Tutton family has been treated first in order to preserve the pattern of chronological development, although it did not, of course, pass to the Knyfton family until 1765.

At the end of this catalogue are noted related Knyfton estate records at the Somerset Record Office in a collection deposited by a Wells solicitor (ref.DD/FS, these are catalogued here as [DD/NW 74-76], but remain stored as DD/FS.

The remainder of the present collection consists largely of groups of deeds acquired by the depositors and their predecessors in the course of business and these have been simply arranged by alphabetical order of parish concerned. Of some note among this section are the 2 bundles concerning the Bacon family estates in North Petherton and Michael Church (DD/NW 63-4), the deeds concerning the manor of Oath which have extended knowledge of its descent (DD/NW 58), and the charitable lease concerning a cottage at North Perrott, 1734. (DD/NW 68)
