The records remaining in the Somerset Record Office are mostly little deeds relating to properties in the Weston - Bristol - Bath area. In general the artificial arrangement imposed on the documents during preliminary sorting (at the time of deposit) has been retained, since it is not possible to retrieve the original arrangement. The majority were bundled topographically by parishes, in alphabetical order (1 - 29). Three original bundles were retained (30 - 32), and the remaining documents grouped in four bundles, one relating to the Baker family, Nailsea and Weston-super-Mare property (33), two arranged approximately alphabetically under place to which the document refers (34 - 35), and the last relating to the Drake family.

  • Baker, Ernest E, d 1931, solicitor, of Weston super Mare, Somerset
  • Somerset
Administrative / biographical background:

The dual title Hodge (Baker) has been given to the collection since the documents were most probably accumulated by Ernest E. Baker, solicitor of Weston-super-Mare, who died in 1931 (Som. Arch. Proc., vol. LXXVII, p. 144). The Baker family records, also deposited in the Somerset Record Office (DD/BK), to certain extent supplement the records in this collection and both lists should be consulted for information. Hodge & Co. acquired the collection when they took over the Baker firm in 1938, and deposited them in the Somerset Record Office in 1939. Almost immediately, a large quantity of out-county documents was despatched to appropriate repositories.
