Title: DUNSTERVILLE OF HALSE DEEDS, ETC
Description:

The records deposited in this small collection by the then lord of the manor throw some light on the descent of the manor of Halse from the early 17th century to 1775. The main changes thus illustrated are:

1623 The manor settled in the hands of trustees for the payment of the debts of Sir Henry Hawley.

1639 After the fulfilment of the trust the manor was assigned to Sir Henry's son and heir, Francis (later Lord Hawley).

1652 Manor assigned by last named to Thomas Wescombe of Halse.

1688 Sold in pursuance of an order of the Court of Chancery for payment of the debts and legacies of Edward Wescombe to William Granger. Subsequently, it passed through the female line to the Haviland family and then to the Webber family (see DD\DV 2 below).

1775 Sold by William Webber to George Prior; the surviving deeds, however, stop short of this transaction.

The previous deposit [1-15] consisted largely of deeds leading up to George Prior's acquisition of the Manor of Halse in 1775. The present small addition [16-36] consists of more personal records of the Prior and related Goldney families down to the present century. To be noted are the letter book of George Prior, trading with the Near East (DD\DV 31) and R.C.A. Prior's journal relating to the gardens and grounds (DD\DV 32).

The depositor has placed other Goldney MSS in both the Bristol and the Wiltshire Record Offices.
