Title: Southwood and Mattock families of Pitminster
Description:

This small collection relates to the Southwood and Mattock Families of Lowton House, Pitminster, and supplements more extensive collections received in 1936 and 1944 (ref. DD/MT).

Thomas Southwood, whose family was established in Pitminster at least by the 16th century, had extensive property interests in the neighbourhood of Pitminster and Angersleigh, and in 1822 purchased the manor of Taunton and Taunton Deane from the bishop of Winchester (see DD/AY 3). He died in 1830 and as heir to the greater part of his estates, including the manor of Taunton, chose his servant Robert Mattock I (DD/CH 85/3). Mattock died in 1859 and was succeeded by his nephew Robert Mattock II (d. 1898), the estates then descending to his third son, Ernest A Mattock.

The collection chiefly consists of miscellaneous documents relating to the administration of the manor of Taunton, and to property tenure and estate administration in Angersleigh, Pitminster and other places nearby. Some personal papers and correspondence are also included. Almost no original bundling survived in the collection on receipt, and documents have been grouped as seemed appropriate.
